Reflect.Rethink.Refresh.

Every August, as a new school year begins…

I always use this time to reflect on my own life, and take it as an opportunity for a refresh…

A “new beginning”.

For me, as a business owner, I have big goals this school year.

I plan to reach more people, plan more events that are powerful and impactful…

Lead more book groups…

And take on more 1:1 clients.

That being said, I am the type of human who desires to see it all come to fruition now.

Anyone else!?

As I was going through my work bag this past week…

I came across a quote I wrote down a couple years ago while listening to an Eddie Pinero podcast…

“Stop looking up at the mountain, and look down at the very next step.”

How fitting and timely, huh?!

Now, whether you’re in the midst of an entrepreneurship journey or simply life…

I feel compelled to remind us all that as much as we desire the end result…

Truly… as corny as this sounds…

It really is all about the journey.

Each little new idea, each win…

They all ignite a fire within us that keeps us excited and living.

Without those little sparks…

Those jolts of hope…

We tend to get stuck.

In addition…

We need to have a plan…

And we need to have a “why”.

That being said… I wanted to provide some questions here that I use not only with 1:1 clients to help ignite desire for their season of life… but for myself as well!

You can simply think through them…

Or better yet…

You can get out a pen and paper, and jot down your answers.

Never underestimate the power of getting serious about what you want!

1. If you could snap your fingers, and get whatever you wanted in the next 90 days, what would that look like for you?

2. Let’s say these 90 days have passed, and you have _______, ______, and ______. What do you see, and how do you feel?

3. And how would this make a difference in your life, and in the lives of other important people in your life, if you got this outcome?

These few questions will get the juices flowing.

And you may even choose to keep journaling, brain dumping, or making note of what comes to mind.

These tiny exercises are crucial to keeping us focused and impactful in our day to day lives.

So I strongly encourage you to sit down, and give this little exercise a try.

And if you feel compelled to share…

Feel free to comment to this post, or send me a message or email at laurelvcoaching@gmail.com

Reflections, Farewells, and Transitions

As far as summer breaks go…

Never have we ever experienced one that flew by so.freaking.fast.

I truly feel like we JUST got on break (my kids do, too ;))…

But alas, in two days… they return.

This summer was bittersweet for me.

It was different from summers of the past.

G was a bit more independent as he’s heading into middle school…

E was focused on friends…

And even my smallest was a bit more free and friend-driven.

Whereas summers of the past had us booked to the brim daily with outings and adventures as the 4 of us…

This summer had my kids wanting more laid back down time and friends joining along the way.

As beautiful as this is…

I feel the transition deeply.

I have had to accept that my “babies” are no longer babies.

My kids are getting to the point where they don’t need their mom to entertain them 24-7.

They still enjoy it…

But, there is definitely a shift.

And I’ve had to work on embracing this new season with them.

Although it’s natural to feel a bit emotional during shifts and changes…

I’ve chosen to fall more into the gratitude bracket.

I’m so very thankful my kids WANT to socialize.

I’m appreciative that they love sharing their stories and ideas with me.

I value each and every deep conversation…

Which happens to be mostly at bedtime. 😉

I savor more than ever the “I love you, Mom”

And the snuggles and hugs.

I have to smile at the idea of once believing as our kids get older…

They need us less.

They may not need to be fed, changed, and regularly monitored…

But I have found that more than ever…

They need to know I’m there for them.

So Friends…

Those of you with kiddos in this transition…

Going from littles to bigs…

Entering the world where they realize not everything is butterflies and rainbows…

And noticing there is bad with the good…

I encourage you to lean in more than ever…

Be thankful and grateful for the work you’ve done as the parent to lead you up to this point…

And remind yourself to simultanteously allow your kids to experience the world for themselves…

While also allowing them to know you are always there for them…

Whenever desired.

We’ve got this, Parents! 🙂

What Is Meaningful to You?

The summer before my senior year of high school…

We moved an hour from where I grew up.

Seeing as though it was my final year with friends I’d been with forever, the last thing I wanted to do was change schools.

And so I used my dad’s address, and committed to finishing where I started.

As thankful as I was to be able to do this, that was one of the busiest and trying times of my life!

This decision required me to wake up at 4:30am on school days, drive an hour + through all kinds of Chicago burbs weather, complete a typical day of HS… including some before and after school practices for show choir and other performances… work at a daycare after school, followed by an hour + drive home… where I’d quickly eat something… GO TO THE GYM TO WORKOUT!!!, come home to do my HW, and maybe get in 5-6 hours of sleep, if lucky, before doing it all again.

I look back at that time, and am in awe of just how much I committed to.

And I couldn’t help but ask myself…

Why?!

The reason…

Because it was important to me!

It was comfort, friends, teaching, and health.

Everything I committed to held great meaning.

And it was worth every second of the effort.

This past weekend, I spent some time with my kiddos and family in the town I moved to during my senior year of HS…

The town I barey remember living in…

Because I was hardly there.

I was amazed at how in awe of this city I’ve become…

Now that I’m no longer 18… and a kid.

I found myself admiring the trees, the people, the beautiful farm lands, the fair, and the farmer’s market.

I sat back and thoroughly enjoyed kicking off my flip flops as I planted myself in the grass, took in some folk music, watched the kiddos play, and sipped my iced coffee.

I truly felt blissfully content…

Why?

Because what is meaningful to me has shifted in the last 20 years.

What this small town charm provides me now…

It just wasn’t important to me when I was 18.

But it’s immensely important to me now.

I share this to say…

The things that are meaningful to us in life will shift.

It all depends on our age, and season of life.

However…

Core values typically remain rather intact.

I still continue to love people… and music… and beautiful memory-making moments.

I don’t take for granted spending time with those I love.

I still find myself quickly agreeing to drive miles in order to have a good time.

I encourage you to reflect on what is currently meaningful to you.

What meanings have shifted?

What core values seem to have remained intact?

Lean into those core values.

They truly are eye-opening…

And have the potential to make your life exponentially better when you honor them.

Gratitude on The Farm

We’ve been visiting my parents’ farm every summer for years…

Since before Dan and I had kiddos.

Our kids who are now 11, 9, and 7… started visiting as babies…

And metaphorically speaking, so did we.

With each and every yearly summer visit…

I notice tiny differences and shifts.

The older cousins want to do things on their own…

Everyone – kids and adults – enjoy some peace and quiet.

The kiddos are more independent.

And we’re all OK doing our own thing from time to time.

Although there are mild changes each year…

It brings me so much joy to see the priorities that remain the same.

Where the children in all of us come out to say hello.

It’s in the giggles and screams during night games…

The competitive rounds of bags…

Night swims…

Go-kart races…

And Kubota rides.

We may all be getting older…

But the farm seems to remind us all that we’re still kids at heart.

And what a special place to have the power to do that!

For me personally…

I spent much of this past visit choosing to be observant and grateful.

I cherished my early morning wake-ups with my pup, where I had hours to sit on the beautiful Papa-created deck, and enjoy my coffee, doggy snuggles, and early morning bird songs.

I smiled at realizing my parents’ goal of turning their home into “Utopia”…

A place where everyone can’t wait to visit…memories are made… and joy is had…

Has been accomplished.

And to think… they’re still going! 🙂

Love is a verb.

It is an action.

And the efforts that are made on all accounts…

The travel…

The time off work…

The presence of all 15 of us each year…

The never-ending efforts the grandparents put into these summer visits to make them the most memorable time of the year…

THAT is love.

And it is felt.

I will admit…

It’s easy to get nostalgic for what once was…

However…

I encourage us all to be grateful for the past…

While simultaneously basking in what is happening in the present.

Although it may look different now…

There is always something to be grateful for.

You just have to look around with the right lens.

Believing in us, always.

My Boyfriend & I

Every summer…

Our family gathers at my parents’ in Iowa.

This is something that we all look forward to, all year long.

A few weeks ago…

I received a call from my mom (while I was driving – so, the kids could hear)…

Sharing a new idea where all the grandkids come to the farm first

And the parents meet them a week later.

My kids upon hearing this question?…

Ecstatic!

“OMG MOM… YES YES YES!!!”

Despite schedule conflicts and all the questions and thoughts flowing through my head…

I had to admit…

What an amazing opportunity for these kiddos!

I ended up moving my youngest’s birthday party up a couple days…

And on July 12th, their Papa braved the 6.5 hour train ride back to IA… with 6 grandkids!

Now, everyone kept asking me what I was going to do with my time…

And don’t you worry, I created quite the to-do list!… ;)…

HOWEVER…

My consistent reply was…

“Dan and I are gonna date.”

And that is just what we’ve been doing.

Patio lunches, live music, cooking together, visiting the gym, walking our dog, smooth-going errands…

We’ve simply been ENJOYING each other.

img_2609

I have to tell you, it’s all been a blessing in disguise.

We all love our children – of course!

They become our world.

But as this happens…

We often forget about the person we were… pre-kids…

We forget about the couple we were…

Before so much of the focus goes to parenting those kiddos.

Having this incredible opportunity to focus my energy on my husband…

To have the uninterrupted moments to not only hear him…

But truly listen.

Sharing in common interests without having to take anyone elses’ into account…

It’s been such an unexpected gift to our marriage.

A gift that has reminded me…

We DO have something special…

And we DO like being together.

It makes me look forward to our empty nester days…

Knowing that we still have a great time, just the two of us.

My encouragement today…

Don’t forget to date your person!

We can’t all have a week without our kids…

BUT…

Date!

Make time to talk.

Ask for help – so you can.

Because one day…

God willing…

It will be just the two of you…

And my goodness…

By making the time to tend to and nurture your relationship NOW…

You’ll be that much more able to reap the rewards in the future!

Make Every Day Count

This week, a family member unexpectedly passed away.

This makes the third person, under the age of 50, to unexpectedly pass away in the past three months.

Death is such a crazy occurrence…

It’s the one thing that happens to all of us… eventually…

But everytime it happens, it does something to those of us who remain.

It reminds us that we’re not immortal…

And that death can take any of us… any day.

We all believe we’re the exception when it comes to death.

That sure, it will happen one day, but way down the road.

It’s hard to accept it could happen to any of us, at any moment.

So we keep on with our robotic days…

Checking things off the endless to-do list…

Holding onto grudges with friends, family, and loved ones…

Ignoring our kids as we spend hours scrolling the phone…

Neglecting to take care of our minds and bodies…

Always thinking…

One day, I’ll do better.

Friends…

The entire point of THIS blog entry…

Is to strongly encourage you to DECIDE to do better NOW.

No day is promised.

And man…

Have I been so unfortunately reminded of this time and time again over the past several years.

Please allow this to be your reminder!…

To be present…

Get curious.

Ask questions…

Admire the beauty around you, in every moment.

Be grateful.

Be kind.

We cannot control when our time will come…

But we can control what we choose to do with the time we have left on this earth.

My wish for us all today…

Is that we choose wisely…

And that we end each day feeling proud of the hours we’ve just experienced.

Adult Friendships

While facilitating our virtual Let Them Theory book group, the topic of friendship came up.

One of our members mentioned that she doesn’t have a hard time meeting or talking with new people, however, she struggles with inviting them into her home.

She shared…

It just feels like too much of a risk.

This was such an incredible awareness, and caused all of us to feel it.

As we worked through this idea, it ultimately came down to one main thing…

The fear of being judged.

I think we’ve all been there, especially as we get older.

We want friends so badly…

But we feel the need to “earn” them.

I want to paint a different perspective for you.

Mel Robbins touches on this in her book on dating relationships…

But I want to apply it to meeting and acquiring new friends.

What if… we started looking at each potential connection as more of a learning experience?

One in which each time we allow a new person in…

We take note of what we want in a friend…

And what we don’t.

If you are someone who keeps a more laid back home, allows the house to look lived-in, keeps dishes in the sink, and houses piles of laundry in various corners…

Someone who values a catalog-worthy, pristine, and well-organized home may not be your new bff.

And as difficult as that may be to accept, it’s a valuable note to make.

As we get older…

And responsibilities add up…

It’s crucial to get choosy with the people who will occupy our time and mind.

Personally, I’ve come to realize that in my own life…

If I’m going to spend time away from my home, kids, and family…

I want it to be worth it!

I want the people to fill me up…

I want my nervous system to be calmed…

And I want to return home feeling rejuvenated…

Not emotionally drained and exhausted.

We get to decide what we want in a friend, and who deserves our time and energy.

I’ve also learned that not everyone has to be my best friend…

And same goes for you.

A great way to keep track of what you do and don’t want when it comes to friendships…

Is to create a legit list of the qualities you desire in a friend…

And to decide you won’t accept anything less.

This doesn’t mean you’re rude or brush people off…

It just means you know what you want…

And you choose to honor your values.

Positive connections are one of the key factors in living a good life!

Taking that in…

I encourage you to put yourself out there, “take the risk”, and with each and every encounter, allow that to be a lesson of what you want, and what you don’t, when it comes to friendship.

Do this for a while…

And you’ll find yourself surrounded by the most beautiful tribe.

On The Road Again

On June 9th, I went in for a yearly physical.

Although everything overall looked “great”…

There were two things that surprised me – my weight, and my cholesterol

The scale is not something I choose to use often.

We’re just in a… “complicated relationship”. 😉

I will also say, I typically choose to look anywhere but the reading on the scale when at the doc.

I just prefer to go off of how I feel, and for quite a while, this worked.

However, as much as I hate to admit it, I have not been feeling my best these days.

So, I looked.

Yikes.

The highest number I’ve ever seen displayed after stepping on the scale.

And although the cholesterol levels aren’t to the “you need meds” point yet…

They were also higher than normal.

Now, I am no stranger to struggles around food, weight, and body image.

It actually may even be the topic of my first book!

I’ve attempted pretty much every diet or fad you can imagine…

And I’ve fit my body into sizes 2-16 over the last 10 years.

Zooming in on the last 4-5 years, however…

I have DONE.THE.WORK to greatly improve my mindset around food and body issues…

And I just have to say…

THANK GOD!

Because when I stepped on that scale… and saw the increased cholesterol numbers…

My response was not one of tears and extreme thoughts…

It was one of awareness and ambition.

I think we all come to a point in our lives – for me, it’s been turning 40 – where we realize we’re not immortal, and that if we don’t truly make our health a priority NOW… it’s only going to decline faster from here on out.

As a mom of three kiddos still in middle and elementary school, I desire to be present, energetic, and THRIVING around them.

And as I get older… and become an empty nester… I want to feel AMAZING so my husband and I can live out our best lives traveling the world, and enjoying our hard earned “us time”.

When I have grandkids… I want to be able to get on and off the floor with them and joke and play.

And all of those things require some shifts.

After a pretty direct heart-to-heart with my husband on the evening of June 10th…

On June 11th, I woke with fire in my belly, and a determined mindset.

But this time is different.

I’ve done the diets, I’ve done the restrictions.

I’ve done the therapy, and I’ve had the coaching.

My 25+ years of experience with the above has led me to this amazing awareness…

Knowing what to do hasn’t been the issue.

Quick fixes…

Lack of consistency…

And remaining quiet about my journey (aka – little accountability)…

Are to blame.

And I’m here to tell you…

I’m ready to take the time, be consistent, and hey…

I’m sharing this journey with all of you!

HELLO, ACCOUNTABILITY! 😉

I share this with you now because so often, we share the final results.

The before and after.

We do this, because we’ve succeeded.

It’s inspirational and less scary, because you’ve already shown up, and done the work.

But not so often do people publicly share, in real time, their journeys.

Which I always love when people do.

Because to me, seeing a health journey in real time…

The triumphs AND the struggles…

The perseverance even when it gets super hard and SUCKS!!!!!…

THAT is major inspo right there!…

And validates that all those feelings are normal.

And don’t have to stop us!!!

I’m not making this blog about my health journey, however…

I will share updates here and there on my social pages and within my Thrive Tribe.

I read a quote a couple weeks ago that said…

“The definition of self-control is to choose the important over the urgent.”

This quote spoke to me loud and clear…

And came at the perfect moment.

And that’s what I’m going off of this time around.

Not all the rules, restrictions, and shame…

But simply choosing

For myself and myself alone…

The “important” over the urgent.

If anyone else is currently on a health journey…

And you’d like to join our Thrive Tribe for accountability, motivation, and encouragement…

We’d LOVE to have you.

From Funk to Enlightenment

Summertime with my kids is my absolute favorite.

Every year, I look forward to the laid-back mornings, the lack of intense preparation, and the memory-making adventures.

But alas, this June has been filled with “the adventures” of summer school and tutoring.

As grateful as I know we should be for these wonderful opportunities with fabulous instructors, I’d be lying if I didn’t embarrassingly admit that after the first few days of spending… mm-hmm… an hour and 15 minutes in the car…

Simply to pick up the kiddos and return home…

I was pretty funked out.

It just didn’t feel like the best use of our precious memory-making time.

As fate would have it, this week, I came across a podcast with Dr. Chatterjee and a Zen Buddhist teacher, Haemin Sunim, and ya know what the focus was all about!?

Finding happiness, cultivating inner peace, and slowing down in a fast-paced world.

Ok universe. I hear you… go on…

Friends…

This wasn’t even from this week…

It was shared in September of 2024!

Don’t ya love when that happens!?

As many amazing nuggets of  wisdom as there are in this podcast, there were three things that truly spoke to me in this month of June!

One: The idea of impermanence, and that all things only last for a limited time, and we move on.

Summer school and tutoring ARE a blessing, and they will not last forever.

Two: The idea of being relaxed, content, and grateful with what you already have, rather than constantly trying to go somewhere.

This was huge for me.

Immediately upon absorbing this statement, I was flooded with examples of just how much this month of June is teaching my kids and I.

We’re naturally being guided towards what we already have.

My kids are seeing more friends than usual, because we’re home!

The girls have been reading to each other and drawing me pictures on the drive to and from summer school.

I’m being reminded of the village I’ve built around me as friends and neighbors are showing up to help out.

We even brought out Legos, Jenga, Lincoln Logs, and other games for the first time in I don’t know how long, and we created, imagined, played, and laughed.

Three: The feeling of meaning in your life.

I’m such a busy person.

I have a very hard time slowing down, and although I feel I find meaning in going and doing…

These past couple of weeks have proven to me that although grand outings and events CAN be fun, they’re not required to showcase my meaning.

My meaning during the summers…is to be with my kids!

To hear them, to converse with them, to love them, and to make memories with them…

None of which require anything more than my presence and attention!

Because acknowledgement is the first sign of love and self-care, I want to present three questions for reflection when it comes to cultivating your inner peace and slowing down:

  1. How do you know when you are happy?
  1. What is there to be grateful for in this moment?
  1. What is your overall worldview? Do you believe the world is uncaring and cold, and that only you can bring about your own success? OR… Do you believe the universe outside is caring and benevolent, and through prayer, will do its best to deliver what you’ve asked for? Expand on this.

Sure, we have had to slow down these past couple weeks, and to be honest, this is not the way I would have chosen to spend a month of our summer time.

But as Haemin shares…

There’s real opportunity in situations where things don’t go our way, as it leads to openness and curiosity.

I can’t say I disagree.

Stay tuned each Sunday to thrive and shine even brighter!

Sober Curious

Alcohol.

Let’s talk about it.

For the past two years, I’ve found myself being extremely sober curious…

Meaning, I’ve been becoming more aware of my relationship with alcohol…

Why I drink…

When I drink…

And how it makes me feel.

Oh yeah, it’s been fun. 😉

I can’t exactly pinpoint when this all happened, but I suddenly found myself one day listening to sober podcasts, following sober advocates on Instagram, and taking occasional breaks from alcohol myself.

Because drinking has never been my “vice”…

I honestly felt SILLY feeling such guilt around it, especially when it’s promoted everywhere, for every occasion, for all the “guarenteed” fun!

But when just a couple beverages started gifting me guaranteed anxiety, and had me feeling less than who I authentically am and aspire to be… I felt compelled to dig in!

Now, although I still partake, I feel proud to say that my sober curiosity has led me to some great realizations that I’d love to share with you.

For starters, and what I believe to be a huge and very important realization, is that if I need a drink to have fun, the event and/or company may not be for me!

Yes, hard to accept… but so true.

Secondly, all the things that are good for me and I love doing are far more enjoyable and effective with minimal alcohol; food choices, exercise, being a present and patient mama/wife/friend, coaching, and writing.

Lastly… no hangovers are topnotch (and sadly, these days… it doesn’t take much for one)!

I’ve also noted when I truly enjoy a beverage (or two, let’s be honest), and when I don’t want one and am simply partaking out of habit.

I’ve accepted that at 5pm pretty much every day… I will get “the urge”… but it’s mostly a reminder that it’s time to pause and take a breather.

Now, for anyone who is reading this and having a lightbulb moment…

Maybe you’ve been sober curious as well…

I want to share a few reflection questions I often ask myself when it comes to alcohol.

Feel free to simply think these through, or actually pull out your journal, and go on your own self-discovery journey around your relationship with alcohol.

  1. Why and when do I choose to drink alcohol?
  2. How does alcohol make me feel?
  3. Could I benefit from less or no alcohol?
  4. How would I rate my overall relationship with alcohol?

When it comes to living a happy and purposeful life…

Intentionality is key.

We cannot make changes on things we aren’t aware are happening.

You may be like me, and feel that you don’t drink that much…

And therefore, it’s not a problem.

But truly…

If any habit… no matter how big or small… is affecting the overall quality of your life and well-being, you owe it to yourself to get curious about that!

For me thus far, this journey has led me to realize I am capable of allowing my awareness to guide me and feel more in control when it comes to drinking and my choices around alcohol…

Especially during summer!!!

I know others who have decided to refrain completely, because they can’t just have one or two…

And all of that is OK!

That’s why it’s all a personal journey, and there is absolutely zero judgement here.

We’re all doing the best we can.

And the fact that you’ve read this far shows you care about your choices and well-being!

As Maya Angelou once said…

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

Awareness helps us do better!

Wishing you the best on your own sober curious journey.

Believing in us, always.
